LMPD: 3 cows found in Highlands, 1 still missing

Officials are asking the public to call 911 should you spot it.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If you were out in the Cherokee Park area Friday morning you might have spotted a wild sight! At least 10 cows were seen running through the park, golf course and surrounding neighborhood.

LMPD says of the four cows that were on the move Friday, three were found around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said they were located in the Highlands around Baxter Avenue. A volunteer from West Virginia was able to corral the cows into safety. However, one cow is still missing and they're asking the public to call 911 should you spot it.

According to LMPD, around 9 a.m. two cattle trucks were off-loading the cows from one truck to another near Grinstead and Lexington roads. The report says that at least 10 cows got loose during the exchange.

Officers at the scene told WHAS11, the trucks were exchanging cattle because one of the trailers had been damaged by a UPS truck in the backup caused by a serious crash near Cochran Hill Tunnel earlier in the morning.

No animals or people were injured in the trailer crash, LMPD says.

A department spokesperson said Louisville Metro Parks officials and Louisville Metro Animal Services were assisting police in securing the cattle.

Bob Stagg was playing golf at the Cherokee Golf Course when he and his friends saw the herd running wild.

"We looked across the valley and there they were on Baringer Hill," Stagg said. "Then when we got to number four there was one stray, apparently, that had left the herd and was walking across the green, so we waited until it moved to the side and then proceeded to play."

He said he's seen deer all the time near the park, but nothing like this.

"It's a change," he joked. "I texted friends who are out of town, who usually play here with us, and just told them that the deer had grown!"

Metro Councilmember Cassie Armstrong took to social media to ask the community to remain out of the area while officials try to get the herd settled.

"We know the cows loose in Cherokee Park is exciting, but please stay away from the scene," Armstrong wrote. "All the people/vehicles are spooking the cows and causing them to disperse—making it harder to safely contain them."
