LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Members of the Highview community are asking for answers after a six-year-old boy was killed in a shooting late Thursday night.
According to Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) Maj. Matt Meagher, a shooting was reported at a home on Sandidge Dr. around 10:00 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a young boy who had been shot. He died at the scene.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the boy as 6-year-old Brandon Malone Jr. of Louisville. Some details about the child's death, including how the shooting happened, have not yet been released.
"I'm shocked," said Nickie Carpenter, who lives in the neighborhood where Malone was killed. Carpenter said she and her husband had no idea what was happening Thursday night when emergency crews arrived on the scene.
"I thought it was a fire," Richard Carpenter said. "I saw the fire trucks and ambulance."
Dr. Eddie Woods, a representative for No More Red Dots, said he wonders when enough will be enough.
"How many more babies do we need to lose before we get tight on a lot of different areas?" he asked. No More Red Dots is a community organization that is working to reduce gun violence and mentor young people in Louisville.
Woods said it's going to take everyone to help in solving the problem, especially after more than 20 people under the age of 18 have been killed in the city this year.
"A lot of them aren't necessarily targets, but they're in target areas and that's a problem," he said.
Woods said No More Red Dots is planning to hold a volunteer orientation in the coming weeks to get more people involved in violence intervention efforts.
The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating Malone's death and police said the case will likely be presented to the Commonwealth Attorney's Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
