Victim in Watterson Expressway shooting confirmed as JCPS bus driver, official says

A district spokesperson said Terry Smith Jr., who was killed in Friday's I-264 East shooting, had been a driver for the district since 2018.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A victim killed in a Friday shooting on the Watterson Expressway has been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner said 26-year-old Terry Smith Jr. died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said the investigation is in its early stages, but investigators believe at least two vehicles were involved in the shooting while headed eastbound on I-264 around 5:45 a.m.

Mitchell said Smith, who was traveling in one of the vehicles, was hit by gunfire and crashed into a wall somewhere between Dixie Highway and Taylor Boulevard. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not have any other information about the other vehicle involved.

A Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) spokeswoman told WHAS11 News that Smith had been a bus driver for the school district since 2018.

If you were traveling on the Watterson that morning or if you have any information about this incident, you are asked to call the Anonymous Tip Line at 574-LMPD.
