Weekend closures on I-64 continue as crews install lights at Cochran Hill Tunnels

Motorists traveling on I-64 East and West must take a detour due to weekend closures at the Cochran Hill Tunnels.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced weekend closures on I-64 East and West will continue as crews install new LED lighting in the Cochran Hill Tunnels.

Road closures are scheduled for the following weekends:

  • Friday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 13 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 20 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 27 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Oct. 4 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Oct. 11 at 5 a.m.

KYTC said the dates and times could chance if there is inclement weather or other issues.

Motorists traveling on I-64 West are asked to take the Cannons Lane exit to Lexington Road to Grinstead Drive and reconnect with the interstate. Those on I-64 East can take the Grinstead Drive exit to Lexington Road and Cannons Lane to reconnect.

The LED light installation is part of an existing project announced in 2020 that includes replacing lower-efficiency roadway fixtures by early 2022. The lights are supposed to last longer and require less energy while giving greater visibility. Crews will also clean the tunnel during the project.
