LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police (KSP) are investigating after a man accused of shooting a deputy was killed by police Tuesday night.
According to KSP, a Breckenridge County deputy pulled over a car near Ben Johnson Elementary School in McDaniels, Ky. just before 10 p.m. on Nov. 17. During the traffic stop, the driver of the car, identified as James Horton, 42, of Clarkson, allegedly shot the deputy and ran from the scene.
Police said Horton stole a pickup truck from the area and drove off. The deputy was flown to University of Louisville Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after midnight on Nov. 18, Kentucky State Police troopers saw the stolen pickup truck in the Wax community of Grayson County and began their pursuit. During the pursuit, police said Horton fired his gun several times at the KSP troopers.
The pursuit ended less than 20 miles away Hart County when Horton ran off the road north of Bonnieville, Ky. Police said Horton got out of the truck with a gun and a KSP trooper shot him.
Horton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team.
