Speed Art Museum reopens with Andy Warhol exhibit

The exhibit explores how Andy Warhol's Catholic faith influenced his art and features some pieces that have never been shown before.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville’s Speed Art Museum reopened Sunday morning after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 13.

The museum opened with a brand-new exhibit from a high-profile artist: Andy Warhol. More than 100 works are displayed at the Speed Art Museum’s Andy Warhol: Revelation exhibit.

“Andy Warhol is famous for his work in Pop and promoting consumer culture, but he also had a very spiritual side,” Contemporary Art Curator Miranda Lash said.

The exhibition shows how his Catholic faith influenced his art. It also explores how his queer identity influenced his faith.

The works came from The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. All types of media including paintings, videos and photographs are featured in the exhibit. This is the first time some of these pieces, which were all created throughout Warhol’s life, have been shown.

“This is the first exhibit that explores how he was raised Byzantine Catholic and how his fascination with Catholicism informed the entire scope of his career,” Lash said.

Andy Warhol: Revelation will be open through November 29, 2020.

The museum is taking safety precautions when opening to combat the spread of COVID-19. Everyone who enters the gallery has to wear a mask.

“We are also having time tickets, so we are limiting the capacity, the number of people in the galleries, at any given time just to make sure that you have a very fun but also comfortable experience, Lash said.

This Speed Art Museum is encouraging people to buy their tickets online.
