S. Indiana man charged four months after police pursuit ends in double fatality

Police say Blake Combs is facing numerous charges in the January crash that left two other teens death following a pursuit with police.

MADISON, Indiana — A man is facing numerous charges nearly four months after a crash that killed two people in Madison, Indiana.

Blake Coombs, 19, is facing resisting law enforcement causing death and reckless homicide.

Indiana State Police say on January 9, a Madison police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle Coombs was driving. Coombs fled from police and multiple agencies then became involved in the pursuit.

The pursuit went from State Road 250 to State Road 3 and on State Road 256 back towards Madison.

That’s when police say Coombs lost control on the vehicle, crashing into two utility poles and killing 18-year-old Tyler Cooley and 19-year-old Brooklyn James.

Coombs was taken to the hospital and was treated for serious injuries.

According to police, while Coombs was hospitalized, his blood tests results showed he had controlled substances and marijuana in his system at the time of the crash.

Police say Coombs will appear in Jefferson County Circuit Court but did not specify a date.
