Man arrested in brazen smoke shop shooting that left 1 injured

Patrick Brents was charged with attempted murder after a shooting at a smoke shop in the Wyandotte neighborhood left one person injured.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One man has been arrested after he and another person jumped out of a car carrying rifles and shot up a Louisville smoke shop.

Patrick D. Brents Jr. was charged with attempted murder after surveillance video captured him and another person opening the door to N&T Smoker's Outlet on Beecher Street and shooting a man multiple times.

Police said Brents fired around 19 shots at the victim. The victim was hit, but still able to return fire to the suspects. The man was transported to UofL Hospital with serious injuries and did live.

The shop remains boarded up, but the community is rallying around that employee, who's still recovering.

Everybody here loves him. Everybody. Ever since it's happened, all of us have tried to do everything we can," neighbor Timothy McGuffin said.

Brents was also charged with assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. The second suspect has not been arrested.

There was talk of two getaway vehicles but witnesses on the scene said a plumbing van was driving by when it all happened and the two men drove off right behind them in a red pick up that you can see in the video.

WHAS11's Jessie Cohen was on the scene and spoke with multiple neighbors in the area.

"I tried to tell him to keep calm because he was trying to get up and walk and stuff like that. And he was laying in a big pile of glass from where they shot a display out. So I was just trying to keep him calm and check him for any other gunshot and such like that and try to administer first aid keep his vitals going," one neighbor said.

Police are still looking for the second suspect in the shooting.
