How to beat the heat on your utility bill

We hit the streets to find out how much your bill has increased during summer heat, and what you're doing to keep the bill under control

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — (WHAS11)-After spending Friday afternoon on the streets of Louisville talking to locals (and a few visitors) about their utility bills, we reached out to LG&E and KU to see if they had suggestions for keeping your wallet happy in the summer.

Most people told us they only saw their bills raise up a little bit, maybe $5-$10. Some of them offered their own suggestions, like keeping the thermostat set in the low to mid 70's.

Daniel Lowry with LG&E and KU sent us some tips for businesses and customers.  Customers can seal up their windows to prevent the cool air from cooling the neighborhood.  Planting trees around your home can help keep it out of the sun, which will naturally keep it cooler.  Drapes and blinds can also help keep the heat trapped outside.

Businesses can perform monthly maintenance on their heating and cooling units to keep them working at the best of their abilities.  You can set back the thermostat in the hours businesses are closed.  Also, make sure the vents aren't blocked by furniture or papers.
