LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Archbishop Joseph Kurtz said he will be missing much of this summer and fall's events as he fights cancer in his bladder and prostate.

The 72-year-old who has served as Archbishop of Louisville since 2007 announced his cancer diagnosis in his leadership briefing July 10.

Kurtz said he will be in North Carolina for at least 12 weeks, getting treatment for urothelial carcinoma. He will take part in chemotherapy and immunotherapy for at least 12 weeks before removing his bladder and prostate.

"While the doctor gives me good cause for optimism, there are always dangers and unexpected issues that can arise during cancer treatment, so I ask for your continued prayers," Kurtz said in the briefing.

Kurtz said he will remain in contact with Father Martin Linebach and Chancellor Brian Reynolds of the Archdiocese of Louisville to insure proper leadership and care is provided by the churches in his absence.
