LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Domestic violence is a major component of crime in Kentucky.
A group of Louisville leaders, including police Chief Steve Conrad and Mayor Greg Fischer, were on hand to learn from a nationally recognized expert on the subject.
A report was given to the Domestic Violence Prevention Coordinating Council at its annual meeting. It praised the work done over the last 20 years and offered areas for improvement.
“This report will provide the foundation for renewed collaboration and coordination across system agencies,” the Mayor said. “This should unite and reinvigorate us as we work to respond even more effectively and compassionately to the needs of victims and hold offenders accountable.”
The Domestic Violence Prevention Coordinating Council was created in 1996 and works to improve inter-agency cooperation and communication, intervention, and treatment techniques that will improve responses domestic violence and abuse.
“For as hard as we've been working in this community to try and make sure we are doing what we can to save and help the victims of domestic violence, it the intimate part of violence, clearly we have more we could be doing and this report really gives us a comprehensive list of improvements that can be made,” Chief Conrad said.
