Here are Kentucky and Indiana's favorite holiday movies

"Elf" (2003), "Scrooged" (1988) and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) made the top three on the list nationwide.

The most popular holiday movies in the U.S. based on online trends are out, according to a new report.

The most Googled Christmas movie in Kentucky was "Elf" (2003). You know, that Christmas classic with Will Ferrell where he was raised with elves in the North Pole and was sent to New York to find his true identity.

We didn't forget about you, Indiana! Your favorite holiday movie came in as "The Lemon Drop Kid." The film that forced a New York City swindler to get the money he owed a gangster by scamming people.>

Of course when it came down to the top three overall for the country, "Elf" (2003), "Scrooged" (1988) and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) made the top three on the list nationwide, HowtoWatch.com said in a news release.

The research group took Thrillist's list of "50 Best Christmas Movies of All Time" and analyzed those titles with Google Trends to find the most searched film by state.

"It's science as solid as NORAD's Santa sleigh tracker," the researchers said.

90s movies maintained popularity according to the Google Trend analysis.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) was the most popular in California, Nevada, and Utah, along with "The Muppet Christmas Carol" (1992) trending in Maine.

Others that fall into the oldies but goodies category made the list, too.

The old well-known classics "It's A Wonderful Life" (1946) is still an Illinois favorite.
