Family of woman found dead in Jeffersonville home hold memorial walk to celebrate her life

The family of Stevie Cornett remembered her in a ceremony on the Big Four Bridge days after she was found dead inside a southern Indiana home.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Yellow is not usually associated with mourning, but that's exactly why Stevie Cornett's family and friends chose to wear the color at the Big Four Bridge Sunday afternoon to remember the young woman only with them now in spirit and photos.

"She just had an aura about her," Danielle Cornett, Stevie's sister, said. "Whenever she'd walk into a room or meet anybody, she was just so outgoing and loving and caring."

The family said Stevie was found dead inside a house on East Chestnut Street in Jeffersonville on Monday, but police have not confirmed her identity at this time. Jeffersonville Police said they are investigating the case as a homicide and no arrests have been made at this time.

"She was going to come get a job where I worked at and she was hitting some rough spots in life and just wanted to change," Danielle said.

According to Danielle, her sister had disappeared days before she was found in the home. She never made it to her job interview.

"She was supposed to be heading that way and that's the last time anyone ever heard from her," she said.

Stevie had been going through some personal troubles, according to Danielle, but was working on turning her life around. Danielle said their last conversation was about her sister trying to get her spiritual life right.

"She really poured her heart out," she said. "She thought God didn't love her and I just sent my Bible study messages to get Scriptures to encourage her."

Sunday afternoon, Danielle, her father and loved ones gathered for a memorial walk in Stevie's honor to remember not her death or tribulations but instead the joy she brought to others, releasing balloons with messages written to her to let her know she won't be forgotten.

"She was so happy and she was so motivated and so strong. And she wrote poems and she had dreams," she said. "She couldn't quite bounce back but she was ready to - that's the hard thing."

The Cornetts have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Stevie's arrangements.

Anyone with information about the case should contact Jeffersonville Police.
