SCOTT CO., Ind. (WHAS11) – A 72-year-old man died following a crash in Scott County, Ind. on June 15.

Indiana State Police said the crash happened in stop and go traffic on I-65 northbound due to another crash that had happened earlier on Thursday. The driver of a 1999 Chevy pick-up told ISP he was headed north in the left-hand lane at 70 miles an hour. ISP said the driver had taken his eyes off the road to light a cigarette.

When the driver looked back at the road, he saw a black 2015 Lexus, driven by 72-year-old Lloyd D. Huffman, of Corsicana, Texas, stopped in front of him, according to ISP.

ISP said the pickup tried to avoid a collision but was unable to and hit the Lexus in the rear. The collision moved the Lexus into a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander, which was driven by 57-year-old James Eaton, of Normal, Ill., The Outlander was stopped due to traffic in front of the Lexus.

The driver of the pickup was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Lexus, Huffman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Outlander, Eaton, was not injured.

ISP said everyone involved in the crash had been wearing seatbelts.
The investigation into this deadly crash is ongoing.
