Metro Louisville passes resolution disapproving proposed JCPS state takeover

The Louisville Metro Council voted and passed a resolution that opposes the proposed state takeover of JCPS.

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- With a 16-1 vote, the Louisville Metro Council denounced the proposed state takeover of the Jefferson County Public Schools.

For more than an hour, members debated local control and expressed displeasure with state intervention by an unelected board in Frankfort. Nine members of the Council did not vote, voted present or abstained.

“I was very pleased to see the Council stand squarely on the side of local control, which should be a bedrock principle for everyone in Louisville,” said Councilman Bill Hollander (D-9). “We all welcome state assistance but control of our schools should remain with a locally-elected board.”

The resolution shows admiration for Superintendent Marty Pollio’s leadership, and the changes the Jefferson County Board of Education have made to improve student achievement. A copy of the council’s resolution will be sent to Governor Bevin and each member of the Kentucky Board of Education.

“This is a reflection of what we have been hearing all over the county expressing anger at a takeover of our Jefferson County Public Schools, and eliminating the voices of our community in the process,” said President David James (D-6).
