Fischer, Leet win primaries; both look ahead to November

After Tuesday's primary wins, Incumbent Mayor Greg Fischer and Metro Councilwoman Angela Leet are looking forward to facing off in November.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The stage is set in the race for mayor.

Incumbent Mayor Greg Fischer easily won the primary against four other challengers, pulling in an estimated 75 percent of the vote.

Fischer’s closest challenger was attorney Ryan Fenwick who came in second with about 17 percent of the vote.

Fischer is seeking his third and final term, touting the economic development the city has experienced since he has been in office.

In a statement, he said, “I am confident about putting my team’s record of accomplishments and vision for the future in front of voters to keep Louisville moving forward.”

Republican challenger and Metro Councilwoman Angela Leet made history by becoming the first woman nominee for the city’s top job.

Leet defeated fellow Republican Bob Devore with 66 percent of the vote.

She released a statement shortly after her primary victory saying she would bring a unique perspective to the mayor’s office as a wife and mother.

“I’ve spent my working life in a field made up predominantly of me. I plan to work just as hard to earn the votes of my community.”

Louisville last elected a Republican Mayor in 1965.
