Ballard family to be honored at vigil as police continue working their cases

Sherry Ballard prepares for vigil honoring all missing and murdered people in Kentucky.

NELSON COUNTY, Ky. (WHAS11) -- At St. Thomas Cemetery, where her husband is buried, Sherry Ballard finds peace even on the most difficult days. But this weekend she will be looking to lean on others, who know exactly what she’s going through.

"This is my life. This is what I live every single day when I get out of bed. I don't know where my daughter is, I don't know who murdered my husband,” Ballard said.

On Saturday, Ballard will join a group of others who have missing and murdered loved ones in Kentucky. The vigil is scheduled for Saturday afternoon and Tommy Ballard and Crystal Rogers will be honored.

It’s been 18-months since her husband, Tommy Ballard, was murdered. Their daughter, Crystal Rogers, disappeared three years ago.

Sherry says often the wait for answers can be a lonely one. But this weekend, she will find solace in others who are feeling the same thing.

"It’s just a little comfort that someone is feeling what you feel,” Ballard explained.

While Ballard continues fighting for answers for her family, investigators are continue working the case.

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rick Sander said, "It weighs heavy on me and I want to make sure we're doing everything we can do to solve these cases."

Sanders hired two retired detectives dedicated to the unsolved Nelson County cases. A number of other detectives continue to assist in the investigation.

He also said bringing closure to the families is a top priority for Kentucky State Police. Several weeks ago, he sat down with Ballard, along with FBI, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department and the detectives working the case so she could see what they are doing to move the case along.

His promise to the people is they won't stop working until they have answers.

"The people of Bardstown, the people of Nelson County- they deserve closure. They deserve us investigating this to our fullest potential. They need to feel safe,” Sanders said.

He said time is of the essence, and every minute that passes is a minute farther from the crime.

Sherry worries about the same thing but promises she won't ever stop searching.

"I'm not going to let them forget my daughter. I'm not going to let them forget my husband,” Ballard said.
