Check out the progress on the $63M Papa John's Cardinal Stadium expansion

The addition will add 6,000 seats.

LOUISVILLE (Lou. Business First) -- The $63 million expansion of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium has progressed to a point where you can envision the finished product.

Business First got a chance to check out the expansion at the north end of the University of Louisville football stadium as the new seating starts to take its final shape.

The expansion will close the bowl on the north end of the stadium, and It's the second stadium expansion in a decade as U of L football continues to grow in national stature.

The project originally was expected to add as many as 10,000 seats, which would bring capacity to 65,000. But U of L athletics director Vince Tyra said in February that the addition will be closer to 6,000 seats at completion, according to this Courier-Journal report.

Kenny Klein, senior associate athletic director for media relations and sports information director for U of L, said a request for proposals is pending to determine the exact number of chairback seats that can fit into the expanded area, but he expects the number to be close to 6,000.
