Comparing Meal Kits: HelloFresh

Meal kits are popular and are meant to make cooking easier. WHAS11 puts four kits to the test to see if they are worth your money.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Meal kits are a popular trend marketed as a way to make your life easier. Most of the kits even arrive at your door step as part of a weekly subscription. WHAS 11 Reporter Jonathan Wahl put four meal kits to the test to find out if they're really worth it for your family.

Day 1: HelloFresh

The first meal kit I tried is Balsamic Fig Chicken from HelloFresh. The HelloFresh subscription does require you to buy 3 meals per week (many other companies only require 2 per week). The website is user friendly (www.hellofresh.com) and allows you to pick out your meals and choose food preferences. You can choose the meats you like, if you're trying to avoid grains, or you can even choose an entire plan that is veggie based.

Cost

Per serving, Hello Fresh will cost 9.99. This means your total weekly cost is $59.95 (3, 2 serving meals). Comparing the per serving price to other meal kits we're testing, we give HelloFresh 4 out 5 points for cost.

Time

The HelloFresh meal took me 39 minutes to complete. That's a little longer than I would like, but because it's my first meal kit to prepare, I'm stilling giving it 4 out of five points for time.

Taste

The chicken was amazing! It was tender, and the sauce was flavorful and really topped the dish off. The sweet potatoes were a great addition and the salad was light and refreshing. This HelloFresh meal is one I'd eat over and over again so I gave it 5 out of 5 points for taste.

Health

It tasted great, but is it great for you? To find out I enlisted the help of dietitian Chris Mohr.

"This is a great meal from the folks at HelloFresh," explained Chris. "It’s actually a nice balance of nutrients here. You have the greens and the salad, the sweet potatoes and then the chicken with that fig sauce. It’s really low on fat, 5 grams of fat, 430 calories, 40 grams of protein. It’s a very well balanced and colorful meal."

Chris Gave the HelloFresh meal 4 out of 5 points for health.

"The reason I said a four: I like the greens, the potatoes are good. I'd like maybe a little more vegetable over here, a less starchy vegetable in addition to the greens and the salad," explained Chris.

Overall

I loved the how easy it was to order from HelloFresh and so many of their meals look delicious. I wish there was an option to order just two meals per week, but if you know you want to order three, this company could be a good option. I wasn't super happy with how much time it took to cook the meal, but I have been told once you get into the swing of cooking meal kits your time goes down. In the end we gave this HelloFresh meal 17 out of 20 points.

Stay tuned through February 23 on GMK as we also rate Blue Apron, Kroger Prep+Pared and Home Chef.
